Democratic members of the Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee discuss the panel's Monday hearing on the ongoing global economic crisis and the condition of New Jersey's financial institutions.

The committee heard testimony from five financial and economic experts:

Rae Rosen, senior economist and assistant vice president, Federal Reserve Bank of New York;

Steven M. Goldman, commissioner, New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance;

Caren S. Franzini, chief executive officer, New Jersey Economic Development Authority;

John E. McWeeney, Jr., president and chief executive officer, New Jersey Bankers Association; and

Anthony R. Calascibetta, practice leader, WISS & Co., Economic Advisory Team.

Assembly members Douglas H. Fisher (D-Cumberland), Louis D. Greenwald (D-Camden), Cleopatra G. Tucker (D-Essex), Nelson T. Albano (D-Cumberland) and Matthew W. Milam (D-Cumberland) discuss a three-bill package passed by the Assembly that would enhance the quality of life of New Jersey's children.

The first bill (A-725) would require including information on the dangers of Shaken Baby Syndrome in the resource guide provided to new parents before they leave the hospital. It is sponsored by Greenwald, Fisher and Tucker.

The second bill (A-1411) would create a council on child welfare and social service, tasked with developing a statewide plan to reduce child poverty in New Jersey by 50 percent within 10 years. It is sponsored by Fisher.

The third bill (A-880) would create a "Reading Disabilities Task Force" to create best practices for diagnosing, treating and educating students with reading disabilities. It is sponsored by Albano and Milam.

Assemblymen Nelson T. Albano (D-Cumberland/Atlantic/Cape May) and Louis D. Greenwald (D-Camden) discuss their legislation to legalize professional sports betting in Atlantic City casinos.

The measure (A-1909) would provide New Jersey voters with an opportunity to decide - via a November General Election referendum - whether Atlantic City's casinos should be able to accept in-person wagers, limited to professional sporting events.

 
Gov. Corzine signs energy savings legislation

Gov. Corzine signs legislation that would allow governments to enter into long-term lease-purchase agreements with energy companies, a move that supporters say will create new jobs, save taxpayers money by eliminating energy inefficiencies in public buildings and could act as a catalyst to promote and sustain environmentally friendly - or "green-collar" - jobs.

Assembly Democrats say they support Gov. Jon Corzine's proposed cuts in the current budget. Cozine proposed the cuts because the state is facing a $2.1 billion budget deficit in the current year, which ends June 30.
